Someone once said “true luxury is sustainability” and while we are quite fond of our portfolio, we believe this to be absolutely true. At BOMBEROS, sustainability has always been a pillar of our values, and while we have not been perfect from the start we are constantly looking to improve the footprint we leave.
From the outset we’ve partnered with factories who share our belief of providing exceptional working conditions, fair wages, and the highest-quality production techniques. In 2020 we made a number of improvements which we’re proud of:
- Implemented production to make all footwear re-soleable which makes them lifelong goods. This mean one flight from Spain, one shipment to our clients, and one set of packaging for a pair of shoes that will last a lifetime greatly reducing our carbon footprint.
- Removed all single use plastic goods from our packaging by moving from bubble wrap to Ranpak Ready Roll corrugated paper packaging. This provides a biodegradable, recyclable alternative.
- Transitioned our packaging tape to FSC-certified recycled tape with soy-based inks from NoIssue.
- Wrapped our shoes in 1/3 the amount of paper in the box to reduce our inputs.
- Planted over 50 live oak trees through our shoe trees initiative. Using EPA calculations and the average age of these trees this is the equivalent of offsetting 405,194 miles driven, 18,374 gallons of gas consumed or 179,927 pounds of coal burned.
- Worked with factories to reduce the amount of power and water used to produce our textiles.
While we are proud of this, there is always a next step. In 2021, our goals are to:
- Create a single use cardboard shoe box to eliminate the cardboard shipper from Spain, retail shipper to clients, and cardboard wrap in the retail box à la Allbirds. This step will eliminate 6 square feet of cardboard per pair.
- Double our tree planting to 100 trees annually through our shoe trees initiative.
- Implement recycled materials in our footwear where available.
While these are our current goals, we will continually look to find ways to reduce our footprint and leave the world a better place for future generations.
